Weekly Theme: Inventions
Phonics: Segment and blend long i words with "r controlled a ( -ar) as in start, car
Sight Words and Spelling words:  cart, art, barn, yarn, arm, harm, better, children, or, round
Structural Analysis: Read abbreviations Mr. Mrs. and Dr.
Vocabulary Words:  ingenuity, determination, simple, benefit, thrilled
 Literature and Read  Aloud: The Inventions that changed our world, Kid's Inventions, The Sound of Music, Alexander Graham Bell 
Comprehension skills and strategies.   generate questions as we read a selection and identify cause and effect.
Guided Reading: Carly in the Dark, The First Airplane, A Camera to Hold
Grammar: Understand that color words are adjectives
Writing: Write about "My Invention" and how it will help others.
 
Math
To guide exploration of the relationship between multiples and fractions
To provide opportunities to develop proficiency in adding and subtracting 10s using number grid.
Solve word problems involving making change

Science

Continue with the Penny Experiment
Learn what is matter and what are its properties.
Study properties of solids,

Weekly Theme: Watch It Go
Phonics: Segment and blend long i words with "i, y, igh".
Sight Words and Spelling words:  find, kind, night, right, by, my, shout, ball, head, should, never
Structural Analysis: adding inflectional ending -er and -est to words 
Vocabulary Words:  laughter, meadow, perhaps, ascend, drift, approach, quarrel, view
 Literature and Read  Aloud: Pecos Bill and Slue-Foot Sue, The Kite: Days with Frog and Toad, Toys That Fly, Turtle's Race with Beaver.  
Comprehension skills and strategies.  We will learn to recognize the problem and the solution in a story.  
Guided Reading: Flying High, The Gift, Zoom!
Grammar: Identify adjectives that compare:  eg, tall, taller, tallest
Writing: Write planet reports 
Math
 
Reinforce naming fractional parts of regions
finding fractional parts of collections.
Practice making change by counting up.

Science

Make paper mache planets
Watch "Magic School Bus in Space" movie.
Experiment:  How does a penny change color:  How is this similar to Statue of liberty turning green from its original copper color.

Sight Words and Spelling words:  always, mother, father, try, love, row, low, boat, coat, no, go

Structural Analysis: adding the inflectional ending -y (show- showy, fuss- fussy)

Vocabulary Words:  creative, talent, marvelous original, shrewd

 Literature and Read  Aloud: Olivia, Hilda Must Be Dancing, 

Comprehension skills and strategies.  visualize and differentiate between reality and fantasy.

Guided ReadingThe Painting, Choo! Choo!, Be Bold and Show It

Grammar: Identify adjectives

Writing:.  Write a short report on each planet, Sun, Moon and the stars.



Math

reinforce skills associated with counting and exchanging coins.  

Introduce dollars and facilitate the use of money to explore place value.  

Extend place-value concepts to hundreds.

Practice solving number stories that involve addition and subtraction.  

Develop the use of counting up as a strategy for making change.  


Science

Learn about the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle and how it is effecting the trees in Schaumburg.

Observe what the Moon looks like from Earth.  

Learn the phases of the Moon.

Explain that the eight planets, including Earth, move around the Sun.

Make paper mache planets.

Writing:  Understand the importance of story ideas and word choices and write a story about what might happen next in "Little Rabbit"

Structural Analysis: Read and build compound words

Vocabulary Words:   conditions, forecast, breeze, commotion, tranquil

 Literature and Read Aloud:  Brer Rabbit and the Hurricane, Stormy Weather, The Power of Weather, Showers Dangerous Storms

Comprehension skills and strategies.  As we read the above literature, we will practice" rereading" so we can "compare and contrast" various topics in our reading selections

Guided ReadingWhat will the Weather Be?, Let It Snow, Too Much Rain Today

Grammar:  Use the present and past tense forms of go and do.

Writing:  Write a report about  a type of weather we have experienced.  We will practice more with organizing a writing piece with the main idea and details to support the main idea.

Practice explaining the strategies in solving math problems

Understand Polygons

Identify spheres, cylinders, and rectangular prisms, pyramids, cones and cubes.



Social Studies

Understand what is money and how it is used.

Learn what are needs and wants and how money helps in obtaining them.

Structural Analysis:  Read and build words with inflectional ending -er and -est. 
Vocabulary Words: group, behavior, soar, plead, vivid
 Literature and Read AloudThe Alligator and the Eagle, Pelican Was Hungry, The Rooster and the Fox, Trapped by Ice. As we read the literature, we will learn to make inferences.
Guided Reading: Mole Bakes at HOme, So Many Penguins, Amazing Birds, Magic Tree House( with Beyond Group)
Grammar:  Understand that was and were talk about the past 
Writing:  Create fictional stories of a snowman.
 
Math

This week many Dr. Sues books will be read with a focus on Bortholomew and the Oobleck, To Think I Saw it On Mulberry Street, The Tooth Book, and The Lorax.
We will watch The Lorax movie and connect it to our science lesson of saving natural resources.

Sight Words and Spelling Words: strike, splash, string, split, scrap, scrub, give, say, says, about, read, were
Structural Analysis:read and form contractions with will, am and have (I've, I'll)
Vocabulary Words: connection, support, possessions, relief, typical
Literature and Read Aloud: When I am Old With You, Now Things Are Worse, Gram and Me, Daddy Played Music for the Cows. This week's reading strategy is to practice recognizing the setting and the characters and to generate questions as we read.

Guided Reading:Talking With Grandpa, A Special Trip, A Trip Last Spring, What I Like About Spring
Grammar: Ientify contractions with not and to learn to use the apostrophes in contractions correctly
Writing: We will prewrite, edit and create a final draft about something we do with an older relative.


Math

explore the fact triangles.

Introduce the centimeter as a unit of measure in the metric system.

develop readiness for fractions


Science 

Learn ways to save natural resources.

Hands on activity to experience how plant based natural resources can be used to make dyes.

Sight Words and Spelling Words:like, spike, ride, hide, blike, mine, call, there, how, so, more, funny
Structural Analysis: double the consonants when adding -ed and -ing to words ending with one vowel and a consonant ( top - topping, topped,  bat-  batting, batted)
Vocabulary Words: member, share, concerned, fortunate, trust
Literature and Read AloudThe Stray Dog, A Taste of Salt, A Funny Dog for Ike, All Kinds of Families,  Aunt MInnie and the Twister, Smile Mike!  Family fun.  This week's reading strategy is to generate questions as we read and also to continue making predictions.
